29 BBC: The Plantation

Set in the state of Georgia of the  Antebellum South, this novel spans three generations of a family living on a plantation. They raise tobacco and run breeding pens. The patriarch of the McFayden clan follows the example set by his father and his grandfather before him, and uses his human chattel to satisfy his every base desire. He sires offspring by his wife and his Negro "fancy maid" alike.

The story follows the turbulent times leading up to the War of Northern Aggression beginning in thee 1850s until the reconstruction period after the war. The family includes the Magnus McFadyen, the cuckold patriarch, his cuckquean wife, Ellie, his wanton daughter Delia, and immoral son Richard.

The cavalcade of other characters includes, Stephen the manipulative head of the house Negros;  Beth the head of the kitchen who was Magnus' Negro wet nurse and mammy; Halley the comely quadroon Negro girl taken by Magnus as his "fancy maid", Beulah and Jezebel Negro females consigned to the breeding pens.

As years past, other characters join the procession: Lucius and Quintus, Magnus' quadroon sons by Halley and their not so innocent daughter Sophie. Jacob, Ellie's Negro carriage driver and lover; Misters Thompson and Dobbins the overseer and field boss who take a free hand with the females in their charge; Three-Leg Tom, Isum, Isaac, Homer and Antony who do their duty as Negro "stockmen" in the breeding pens and in the bedrooms of the plantation mansion.

As the war comes home to the mansion, people die and life changes and so does life on the plantation. Atlanta burns and the Union cavalry arrives to burn them out too. Magnus uses all his wiles to save the plantation and his family. Then the human scavengers arrive in the wake of the Army and the war comes home in an unexpected way.

The end finds the plantation a changed place, home to tenant farmers and more illicit operations thrust upon the family in order for them to survive.

It is an epic story of  human exploitation and frailty filled with lust and degradation as the family comes full circle in a turbulent time in history.
